The California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) issued an Industry Advisory outlining the legal requirements applied to “automatic renewal offers” for wine clubs and similar alcohol beverage subscription services. The Industry Advisory is intended to be informational and to make ABC licensees aware of the legal requirements concerning renewals.
An “automatic renewal offer” is a plan or arrangement in which a paid subscription or purchasing agreement, including wine club memberships, is automatically renewed. California and Federal Law regulate such purchasing agreements, and requirements are placed on businesses that offer them. Wine Institute advises members to read the advisory and check with a compliance specialist to ensure these requirements are being met.
